Brief History Of Red Robin
Red Robin got its start in 1969 when a guy named Gerry Kingen opened “Sam’s Tavern” in Seattle. The name was a nod to a song he sang in a quartet. In 1979, Kingen sold the rights to brothers Michael and Steve Snyder to open the first Red Robin franchise in Yakima, Washington.
Through the 80s, Red Robin kept growing with about 175 locations by 1985. That year though, Kingen sold control of the company to a Japanese corporation. They moved headquarters to California but struggled with the brand. So in the 90s, Snyder bought back Red Robin with some investors and worked to turn things around.
Since then, Red Robin has grown to over 500 locations in the U.S. and Canada today, with both company-owned and franchised locations. Red Robin has stayed true to its roots even as they’ve expanded the business and continues serving gourmet burgers in a fun, family-friendly setting.
